Why is the quality of the food I use important?
Food quality affects almost every aspect of koi keeping, including the health and condition of the fish, the quality and clarity of the water, and the amount of maintenance you need to do. Koi have specific nutritional requirements that need to be met by their diet, in order to keep them in good condition with plentiful energy reserves. The use of poor quality ingredients or manufacturing techniques will reduce the nutritional value of the food, and consequently the condition of the fish.
In addition, the amount of dissolved and solid waste that koi produce is directly related to the quality and quantity of the food they receive. A poorly utilised food will generate more waste, both as dissolved ammonia and also as solid faeces. This in turn effects how easy it is to maintain good water quality and clarity. For example, more solid waste means more frequent clogging of the filter system, whilst dissolved wastes encourage algae to grow.
