How does the food I feed affect algae growth?

Some of the food you feed to your koi will eventually be excreted as dissolved or solid waste. Dissolved waste is principally composed of ammonia, which is turned into nitrate by the biological filter. Solid waste is further broken down by micro-organisms in the pond to release both nitrate and phosphate. Nitrate and phosphate are key nutrients for algae, and therefore partially determine how likely you are to suffer with blanketweed and green water.

The amount of food that is excreted as waste is dependent on the quality of the diet, and this is why food quality influences algae growth. For example, an incorrect balance of protein and energy, or the use of poor quality proteins, will lead to higher ammonia production. Equally, the use of poor quality manufacturing techniques and cheap ingredients will increase solid waste production.

KoIExcellence has been developed and tested to minimise waste production, thereby helping to limit the accumulation of algae-encouraging nutrients.
